Please read our policies and documentation before attending your appointment. We’re happy to answer any questions you have before arriving.
Settling In
At the first face to face meeting, your therapist will take a detailed history to gain a holistic view of your child. If you can, bring along one of your child’s favourite toys to help them feel comfortable – we also have a huge array of toys that will interest your child. This will give your child a chance to play with the toys in the room and settle into the new environment, this is an important opportunity for the therapist to observe your child and how they play.
First Assessment
Once settled, your therapist will then assess your child. Depending on the age and ability of your child, this will either be an informal or formal (standardised) assessment. There will be fun elements including games to reward and motivate your child. Your therapist will then give you feedback on the assessment, diagnose and make a plan for your child. At this point, your therapist will give her professional opinion and recommendation but ultimately, it’s your decision what you would like to do. They may give advice and review progress in a few months or may recommend some direct individual sessions.
Additional Sessions
During therapy sessions, your therapist will explain the goals and demonstrate the therapy tasks. You will always leave with homework and an understanding of what you’re to do at home. Homework is crucial to your child’s progress. The foundations are laid in the clinic, the transfer of these new skills need to happen within their natural everyday environment. We understand the demands of everyday life, so the homework is realistic and achievable.
Next Steps
We will regularly update you on progress and further goals.
Your therapist will liaise with school teachers and any other necessary caregivers throughout the block of therapy.
